Cornwall Council / Consultant in Public Health for Cornwall & Isles of Scilly.

What skills & experience do you bring to the CSP Board?
In my current role as a public health specialist at Cornwall Council, I take lead responsibility for 'adult health improvement'. What this means is that I act at a strategic level, with a range of partners, to influence lifestyle factors that have an effect on health. Those factors include smoking, diet, alcohol consumption, social connections and - of course - physical activity. I am very conscious of the impact that active or sedentary behaviours have on physical and mental health and wellbeing.

I have a particular interest in mental health and suicide prevention and tackling the stigma that prevents people talking about these issues. So I was delighted when Cornwall Sports Partnership agreed to sign up to the mental health charter for sport and recreation.

Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I grew up in Derbyshire, studied in London and Plymouth and have lived in Cornwall for the last 27 years. My first degree was in Botany and I love my garden and the natural environment. Later studies and further training led me into the field of Public Health. My sporting interests have changed with stages in my life, but I competed in swimming throughout my school years and netball through school, university and beyond. Once I started a family I stopped competing but enjoyed social tennis. And now I walk (a lot), cycle (a bit) and have started swimming again - low impact sports for tired knees!

I recently walked/limped 25 miles in the Samaritans national sponsored walk, which took place in Cornwall this year - to support a charity that I value hugely.

What do you like to do in your free/spare time?
I am a creature of habit. I prioritise walking from Falmouth to Maenporth and back along the coast path most weekends. The seasons and the weather make it a different experience each time. I will always put gardening before housework. And I wish I had more time for creative pursuits.
